Twitter Video Formats and Quality Explained

What Format Are Twitter Videos In?

If you've ever downloaded a video from Twitter, you probably noticed it saved as an MP4 file. That's because MP4 is the standard format Twitter uses for all videos on the platform. It works on pretty much every device and media player out there, so you won't need any special software to watch your downloaded videos.

This is good news. Whether you're on a Windows PC, a Mac, an Android phone, or an iPhone, MP4 files just work.

What About Twitter GIFs?

Here's something a lot of people don't realize. Those GIFs you see on Twitter? They're not actually GIF files. Twitter converts them to MP4 videos behind the scenes. So when you download a "GIF" from Twitter, you're really downloading a short MP4 video. It plays the same way, loops the same way, and looks the same. The format is just different from what you'd expect.

Video Resolution Options

When you download a Twitter video through Tweeload, you'll usually see multiple quality options. Here's what they mean:

  • 480p is standard definition. It's fine for smaller screens or when you want to save storage space. File sizes are smaller, usually a few megabytes for a short clip.
  • 720p is HD quality. This is a solid middle ground. The video looks sharp on phone screens and tablets without eating up too much space.
  • 1080p is full HD. This is the highest quality Twitter typically supports. Videos look crisp and detailed, especially on larger screens. File sizes will be bigger though.

Not every video will have all three options. The available qualities depend on what the original uploader posted. If someone uploaded a lower quality video, you won't be able to download it in 1080p because that data simply doesn't exist.

File Size Expectations

File sizes vary a lot depending on the video length, resolution, and how much action is in the footage. But here are some rough guidelines:

  • A 30 second clip at 480p might be around 2 to 5 MB.
  • The same clip at 720p could be 5 to 15 MB.
  • At 1080p, expect something in the 10 to 30 MB range.

Longer videos will obviously be larger. A 2 minute video at 1080p could easily be 50 MB or more.

Which Quality Should You Pick?

It depends on what you need the video for. If you're just saving something funny to show a friend, 480p or 720p is plenty. If you want the best possible quality for watching on a big screen, go with 1080p. For more details on grabbing the best quality, take a look at our HD download guide.

The important thing is that Tweeload gives you the choice, so you can always pick what works best for you.
